The “indignity” of bulletproof glass

In Philadelphia, the health department wants to regulate whether convenience stores can use bulletproof glass.

The councilwoman who is championing this idea calls the bulletproof glass an “indignity” in poorer neighborhoods.

Presumably store owners use this bulletproof glass because they think they need it for their safety. Bulletproof glass is not cheap, so they wouldn’t install it just on a lark.

What will happen if this bulletproof glass is banned by local government? Then those neighborhoods, which already have so many problems, will suddenly find themselves with one more: many of the convenience stores that they rely on will probably go out of business or more elsewhere.

Business owners should be able to defend themselves, especially with something as innocent as bulletproof glass.

The “indignity” here is not the bulletproof glass. It is local government trying to excessively regulate businesses and by doing so hurting the neighborhoods they claim to want to help.
